Things To Do

This is one of the most beautiful spots on the planet.  We wished we had discovered it years ago.  But, how about a list of ten things to do when you get here.

1 Canoe or kayak on Lower Wilson Pond. Paddle over to the cove by Rum Mountain and back. For further adventure, paddle all the way to the narrows that joins you with Upper Wilson Pond. Also, great day trips nearby lakes and ponds and streams or travel to nearby Baxter State Park and paddle in the view of Mt. Kathadin.
2 Go hiking.  For those who want a modest, beautiful hike, drive to the foot of Wilson Stream (about 40 minutes away) and hike along the river, up the hillside on parts of the Appalachian Trail until you come to a 57-foot falls.  Or, hike the logging trails right from the Camp with beautiful woodland views of the lake and mountains.
3 Eat at Local Restaurants.  The best fish chowder you will ever eat is at the Rod and Reel restaurant in Greenville.  In good weather, eat on the deck of Kelly’s Landing as Moosehead Lake laps up against the restaurant.  Fresh lobster can be bought at unbelievably low prices in town at Graves Seafood.
4 Go White Water Rafting.  Our kids have done it and say we should too.  It is on our list.  The companies that take you are on Main Street in Greenville.
5 Take a cruise on The Kathadin. It is the old steamboat that once was a main mode of transportation in the region. Available from Memorial Day through Columbus Day. Cruise north on Moosehead Lake (from Greenville) to Mt. Kineo in the morning, hike the trail to the top of Kineo, and return in the afternoon.
6 Go Fishing.  The fly-fishing is wonderful, they say.  We have watched in marvel at the fly-fishing on Kennebec River and are just taking up the sport.  But you can also fish for lake trout, brook trout and land locked salmon on Wilson, Moosehead or any other number of lakes.  Plenty of rental places and a Maine Fly Fishing store in town.
7 Visit Mt. Kathadin.  Take the drive to Millinocket and then follow the route to the beautiful Baxter State Park to Mt. Kathadin, where the Appalachian Trail starts or ends.  It is one of the tallest mountains east of the Mississippi and breathtaking.  You need to do some research if you want to try and go up and down in a day.  Experienced hikers only.  Another alternative, take a scenic tour on one of the several wilderness charter flying service that take off from Moosehead Lake.
8 Tour on an ATV.  This is ATV country with many, many logging roads to travel to hidden-away ponds and wonderful mountain views right from the Camp.
9 Take a Moose Safari. There are tours, but honestly we have seen them almost every trip to Moosehead the past year, including down the road from our Camp.
10 And, if you like winter, consider this: ice fishing on Lower Wilson Pond, a great nearby ski resort, beautiful cross country skiing at Lily Bay State Park and snowmobile trails that are among the best anywhere in the world.

There’s more to do – the swimming off the pebble beach is wonderful (you can see your toes in the water), there is shopping at Indian Hill Trading Post — a couple of nice gift and antique shops, an Internet café, grouse hunting, the awesome views when leaves turn in the fall, day trip to Portland (2.5 hours) or day/overnight trip to Quebec (3.5 hours) or just hanging out in the peace and quiet of the Camp.
